Girls belong in STEM.
Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Kayla Conner - Microbiology PhD student, queen cupcake baker, Tennesseean at heart (hey, y'all), and former Girl Scout. My role as a scientist is not something I take lightly. It's something I'm proud of. I have a unique perspective of how challenging it can be to rise in STEM fields, as a first-generation college student from a low-income background. As I've gotten older, I've realized that it's even harder for females to succeed in the STEM fields (without the added challenges I faced!)
That's why I created an outreach program for the Girl Scouts. I'm passionate about this organization, and I am committed to empowering our future female innovators. I am excited to visit Heart of Michigan troops to talk about my experiences and provide hands-on activities that are sure to get the girls involved and excited.
This project was kicked off in November 2018 with support from Michigan State University's Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST) program (funded by the National Institutes of Health).
